 In Blog
Dr. Ryan Lee Taylor‘s story is one of quiet devotion, steady excellence, and a lifelong commitment to helping others. Today, that story continues, carried forward through generous gifts made in his memory, ensuring his impact is felt across the Choctaw Nation in meaningful and lasting ways.
A proud member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, Ryan carried his heritage with purpose. He sought opportunities to deepen his understanding, spending time reading, learning, and reflecting on Choctaw history and culture. His studies built a sense of self that shaped how he moved through the world and how he cared for others.
From an early age, Ryan approached life with determination and purpose. His academic journey reflected that drive, culminating in graduation with Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa honors. Dr. Ryan Taylor first pursued a career in surgery, committing himself to one of the most demanding paths in medicine. He completed his surgical residency in Alaska and Arizona, where he provided care to diverse and often underserved communities, including Native American populations. These experiences reflected his skill, deep respect for Indigenous peoples, and commitment to improving access to care in rural areas. Ryan became known for his discipline, versatility, and unwavering dedication to his patients. Driven by a desire to expand his impact even further, Ryan later returned to Oregon Health & Science University to pursue radiology, achieving the highest level of specialization in nuclear medicine as a nuclear radiologist. During this time, he built a strong foundation in precision medicine, where accuracy and attention to detail were central to patient care. This rare combination of surgical and radiological training gave him a uniquely comprehensive perspective. For Ryan, every diagnosis and every procedure mattered because every person mattered.
Dr. Ryan Taylor‘s legacy has taken on new life through projects that reflect both his profession, passions, and heritage. At the Choctaw Nation McAlester clinic, support in his honor helped expand the radiology unit, bringing enhanced care and advanced technology to the community. At the Choctaw Cultural Center, the return of American bison to their native prairie after more than 150 years marks a powerful moment of cultural and environmental restoration. A future bison overlook will offer visitors a space to reflect and connect more deeply with the land. These efforts are especially meaningful, reflecting Ryan’s love for the outdoors and his appreciation for experiences that bring people closer to nature, heritage, and tradition. His legacy also lives on in the students who carry his name forward through two dedicated scholarships, the Dr. Ryan Taylor Memorial Scholarship and Healing and Heritage – Honoring Dr. Ryan Taylor. Each scholarship recipient is encouraged to pursue their education with the same diligence, curiosity, and sense of purpose that defined Ryan’s life.
Through these acts of generosity, Dr. Taylor‘s story continues—one of impact, inspiration, and a legacy that will shape the Chahta Okla today, tomorrow, and for future generations.
