Ittanowa – Traveling Together, Learning Choctaw Culture

Since opening its doors in 2021, the Choctaw Cultural Center has welcomed visitors from near and far to learn, explore, and connect with the rich history and culture of the Chahta Okla (Choctaw people). Building on this momentum, the launch of the Ittanowa fund marks an important step forward in expanding access to these meaningful cultural experiences for students across our communities.

Established entirely through donor support, this fund is made possible by generous contributions to the Chahta Foundation, including gifts to the Choctaw Cultural Center’s school admissions fund and proceeds raised during the Cultural Center’s annual silent auction each November in celebration of Native November.

Field trips to the Choctaw Cultural Center offer far more than a day outside the classroom. They provide immersive learning experiences that connect students to the traditions, stories, and resilience of the Choctaw people. While Choctaw tribal members can access the Cultural Center at no cost, many schools face financial barriers that make these opportunities difficult to attain. The Ittanowa Fund was created to help bridge that gap for all students.

The Ittanowa Fund ensures that students from under-resourced schools can participate in these transformative visits. Through interactive exhibits, cultural demonstrations, and storytelling, students gain a deeper understanding of Choctaw history while building connections that extend beyond the classroom.
