*Service requirements

Some of our Chahta Foundation scholarships require payback in service of the Choctaw community. To be eligible, you must be willing to participate in the service requirement as seen in Step 2 of the universal application.

1. The following scholarships require a service obligation requirement upon graduation. Selected recipients will agree to work for the Choctaw Nation in a full-time position related to their field of study: Virginia LeFlore MarshallWilene D Marshall

  • Please note: prior to selection, students will be informed of additional requirements including but not limited to background checks and interviews. Prior to scholarship awarding, students will be informed of the service obligation and will have the opportunity to accept or decline the scholarship.

2. The following scholarship requires a service payback within the education field including but not limited to working with Choctaw and/or Jones Academy students: Kaneubbe

  • Please note: prior to scholarship awarding, students will be informed of the service payback and have the opportunity to accept or decline the scholarship.

The Chahta Foundation helps facilitate or promote additional scholarship opportunities. Please note that these scholarships are not included in the universal application and require an additional application.


How to apply for Chahta Foundation scholarships

Eligibility

  • Be a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.
  • Currently admitted, enrolled or planning to enroll at a college or university for the upcoming fall semester.
  • Carry a 2.5 GPA or higher for both graduating high school seniors and current college/university students.
  • Some scholarships have specific criteria. Please visit their websites to see eligibility.

Process

  1. Fill out the APPLICATION for Chahta Foundation scholarships
  2. Be sure to answer the short answer questions
    Some are required, some are optional, but you should complete as many as possible. The short answer questions on the application give you the opportunity to tell the scholarship committee more about yourself. This will help the committee identify and pair you with unique Chahta Foundation scholarship opportunities that require awardees to have specific aspirations or life experiences. All responses are required to be 250 words or less.
  3. Upload or mail in ALL required documents (see the list below)

What is a competitive scholarship?

Chahta Foundation competitive scholarships are often geared toward students who plan to pursue advanced degrees, and who are making a difference to the Choctaw people and within their educational fields.

When does the scholarship application close?

The deadline to complete the Chahta Foundation scholarship application is March 31.

I live out of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma boundaries and do not have a lot of activity with the tribe. Should I apply?

Absolutely! Cultural involvement is not the only element to this scholarship application. Many previous winners have lived outside of Oklahoma.

I am applying to school, but I will not know if I have been accepted until after the deadline. Should I apply?

Yes. We understand that some schools do not reveal their students until April. When you apply, be sure to note this on the application. Once your acceptance letter arrives, send it to us immediately so we can add it to your file for consideration.

May I apply for more than one Chahta Foundation Scholarship?

Yes! Our universal scholarship application will automatically match your application with every scholarship that meets your qualifications. Be sure to fill out the application completely to ensure you’re considered for every possible scholarship.

May I only use the space provided on the application?

Yes. We have restricted certain responses to 250 words. This helps narrow down responses to the most important things you’d like the scholarship committee to know.

Should I submit the application as a whole, or send the information piece by piece as it is completed?

Our online scholarship application allows you to save your work and return to it later. This will allow you to submit your completed your application in-full, as you wait for additional documents and information to become available.

Who makes up the Scholarship Committee?

The Chahta Foundation Scholarship Committee remains anonymous to protect the integrity of the application and selection processes.

I am receiving a scholarship from Choctaw Nation Higher Education and/or Career Development. If I am selected for this scholarship, will I lose that funding?

No. You are able to receive funding from all three sources simultaneously.

I have never made a resume before. Is there someone who can help?

Yes! The Choctaw Nation Career Development program has trained staff who will gladly help you build a great resume. Call 580-924-8280 x2600. You can view a sample resume here.

How do I submit the application?

The Chahta Foundation Scholarship application is completely online. Apply here!

Additional documents may also be submitted by mail to PO Box 1849 Durant, OK 74702 or email to scholarship@chahtafoundation.com.

I have submitted my application, but I have a change. What do I do?

The Chahta Foundation Scholarship application allows for applications to be adjusted, even after submission, until the deadline of March 31st. Click here to head back to the application portal!

What is considered a traditional and non-traditional student?

Non-Traditional Students are undergraduate students who are:

  • An Undergraduate or Vocational Student
  • At least one year from previous education efforts (including High School or some College or Vocational credits)
  • AND Do not currently hold a degree

Traditional Students are undergraduate who:

  • Begin Undergraduate College or University, Vocational, or Technical Studies immediately after High School
