What is a competitive scholarship?
Chahta Foundation competitive scholarships are often geared toward students who plan to pursue advanced degrees, and who are making a difference to the Choctaw people and within their educational fields.
Academics, cultural involvement, and personal goals are weighed and judged by a committee, and a single winner is selected for each scholarship.
When does the scholarship application close?
The deadline to complete the scholarship application is March 31, 2017.
How do I convert my additional documents into PDF format?
Your transcript must be submitted in a PDF format. Your letters of recommendation and financial needs analysis (FNA) can be uploaded into the system as well, if you have them. This can be accomplished in several ways:
- Ask your school to provide an electronic copy of your resume and/or financial needs analysis. The individuals who write your letters of recommendation can provide them in pdf format. Follow this link to see how to save a word document as a pdf: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PIiwxDQ6yk
- Connect your computer to a scanner and convert paper documents to pdf files. Procedures will vary by scanner. Please consult your scanner manual for instructions.
- Scan the documents using your phone and the Genius Scan app. It is a free app that you can download onto your smartphone. Using your phone’s camera, take a picture of your documents and turn them into a PDF. This link (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8z6PHHd2Exc) will show you a video tutorial on how to use Genius Scan to save your documents and email them to yourself, using your smartphone. If you use this option, we suggest emailing the documents to your computer and uploading them from there into the scholarship application.
Your additional documents may also be mailed, faxed, or emailed to the Chahta Foundation at the address at the bottom of this page.

How do I convert my tribal membership card into a PNG?
Your tribal membership must be submitted in a PNG or JPEG format. The easiest way to accomplish this is to use a smartphone to take a picture of the card, then email it to yourself. You can, then, upload it into the scholarship application.
I live out of the 10.5 county service area and do not have a lot of activity with the tribe. Should I apply?
Absolutely! Cultural involvement is not the only element to this scholarship application. Many previous winners have lived outside of Oklahoma.
I am applying to school, but I will not know if I have been accepted until after the deadline. Should I apply?
Yes. We understand that several schools do not reveal their students until April. Please apply, and note this on the application. Once your acceptance letter arrives, please send it to us immediately, and we will add it to your file, for consideration.
Are there scholarships listed that the Chahta Foundation Scholarship Application Packet does not include.
Yes. The Chahta Anumpa scholarship has its own unique application. Information on this scholarship and the application can be found at http://chahtafoundation.com/cfscholarships
May I apply for more than one Chahta Foundation Scholarship?
Yes! Our online scholarship application will automatically apply you for every scholarship that meets your qualifications. For this reason, be sure to fill out the application completely.
May I only use the space provided on the application?
Yes. We have restricted certain responses to 250 words. This helps narrow down the most important things you’d like the scholarship committee to know.
Should I submit the application as a whole, or send the information piece by piece as it is completed?
Our online scholarship application allows you to save your work and return to it later. This will allow you to complete your application fully, or on an ongoing basis as you wait for additional documents and information to become available.
Who makes up the Scholarship Committee?
The Chahta Foundation Scholarship Committee remains anonymous to protect the integrity of the application and selection processes.
What does the Scholarship Committee look for in an applicant?
The Scholarship Committee is looking for the person who can best represent the values of the Chahta Foundation. This includes, to name a few, the values of academics at all levels, culture, and perseverance.
I am receiving a scholarship from Choctaw Nation Higher Education and/or Career Development. If I am selected for this scholarship, will I lose that funding?
No. You are able to receive funding from all three sources simultaneously.
I have never made a resume before. Is there someone who can help?
Yes! The Career Development program has trained staff who will gladly help you build an effective resume. Call 580-924-8280 x2600. We have also attached a fill in resume template here.
